Why is my trees bark peeling off?

Great question! Bark peeling can mean several different things depending on the tree species and what the peeling looks like. Here are the most common reasons:

🌳 It's Completely Normal (Don't Panic!)

Many trees naturally shed bark as part of healthy growth. As the trunk expands, the outer bark cracks and falls away. Species that do this include:

Sycamore / London Plane – classic patchwork peeling, totally normal
Silver Birch – peels in papery sheets
Shagbark Hickory – long, shaggy strips are its signature look
Crape Myrtle – smooth, colorful inner bark revealed after peeling
Eucalyptus – sheds in long ribbons seasonally

⚠️ Peeling That Could Signal a Problem

If it's not a naturally exfoliating species, peeling bark is worth investigating:

Fungal disease (cankers) – Look for sunken, discolored, or oozing areas beneath the peeling. Canker diseases kill patches of bark and are common in stressed trees.
Borers (insect damage) – If you see small holes, sawdust-like frass, or winding galleries under the bark, you likely have wood-boring beetles or larvae (like emerald ash borer or bark beetles). This is serious.
Frost cracking / sunscald – Sudden temperature swings, especially in winter, can cause the bark to split and peel on the south or southwest side of the trunk.
Physical injury – Lawn mower damage, weed trimmer wounds, or animal rubbing (deer, squirrels) can strip bark and expose the vulnerable cambium layer underneath.
Root stress or drought – A tree under prolonged stress diverts resources away from bark maintenance, making it more susceptible to peeling and disease.

Is the inner wood green and moist (healthy) or brown, dry, and dead?
Are there insects, eggs, or tunnels visible under the bark?
